What is the deal with CHINESE walnut cookies?
- Chinese walnut cookies/Hup Toh Soh are eaten on any holiday, Chinese New Year…or to be honest, whenever you want a really good snack!!
- Hup Toh means walnuts in Cantonese.
- These cookies will remind a lot of Chinese/Asian people of their childhood.
- They're an absolute classic - like your equivalent of a nicer digestive biscuit or Hob Nob 😂
What do they taste like?
- 👅 Flavour: Light, nutty, crumbly, fragrant, not too sweet, with a hint of saltiness. Perfect with a cup of tea, coffee or freshly brewed tea.
- 🍪 Texture: Slightly crunchy on the outside, soft and crumbly (like a richer Chinese almond cookie) on the inside, with crackly edges. Careful - they can be a mess to eat aha! The walnut cookies you can get in your local Chinese bakery can even be bigger than your hand.
- 🤩 Best for: Your afternoon snack or tea (or anytime really!)
Key learning from using the @woksoflife recipe :)
- Delicious flavour and pretty crumby texture.
- My cookies turned out a lot more cakey in texture but this may have been me as opposed to anything to do with the recipe.
- Next time, definitely experiment with making them a bit bigger to replicate some of the cookies that I find in my local Chinese bakery.
I’ll be experimenting with my own version and will post the recipe soon!

Stay happy and baking 🧡
